A masterpiece of Giambattista Tiepolo, painted in 1748 at Palazzo Dolfin Manin in Rialto for Ludovico Manin, the future and last Doge of Venice, to celebrate his marriage to Elisabetta Grimani. Nobility, seated at the centre beside the statue of Minerva, patron of science and art, is flanked by Magnanimity, with her lion, sceptre and cornucopia, and by Liberality, with a golden necklace and a vase of riches. From the Manin family the painting passed in the 1880s to Baron Gustave de Rothschild for his Paris palace on Avenue Marigny, later to Baron Elly de Rothschild. It was sold at Sotheby's in London on 30 June 1965 to Spencer Samuels of New York, and acquired by the present owner at Maastricht in 2005. Published in the catalogue raisonné by Filippo Pedrocco, Tiepolo: The Complete Paintings (Rizzoli, New York, 2002).
